The late Mrs MacDougall of Lunga ( Richmond Stewart of Ensay )
The death of Mrs MacDougall of Lunga, Mother of Major ( Stewart ) MacDougall, the much esteemed Laird, has cast a deep gloom over the whole of the district were her long life has been mostly passed,
and were she lived in the hearts of all.
This dear revered Lady was a true type- almost the last left of the old Highland Lady.
Mrs macDougall was kindly in manner, large hearted, generous to a degree, and full of sympathy.
She was beloved by her people, whose language she spoke and whose interests were also hers.
Mrs MacDougall was a daughter of the late Mr Donald Stewart of Luskintyre - a cadet of the Stewarts of Garth.
In 1847 she married Mr MacDougall of Lunga, and at the ripe age of eighty two she has now passed away and with her a landmark in the
county and a link with the past has gone forever.
In St John's Church Oban on Monday the first part of the burial service was conducted by the Bishop of Argyll, assisted by Dean Pressley Smith,
in the prescence of a large congregation. The hymns included ' Rock of Ages' and ' Now the labourers
task is o'er' the ninetieth Psalm being also sung. At the close the death march in 'Saul" was
played on the organ while the oaken coffin, covered with beautiful wreathes, was borne from the
church to the Hearse, which then left for Craignish were the internement took place.
On tuesday the Rev Neil MacMichael minister of Craignish held a short service at the house,
then the long procession left for the family burying ground in Kilmorie Churchyard to the strains
of 'Lochaber no more" played by Lungas piper. the coffin was borne shoulder high by the tenantry
and was followed by the entire population of the district and from the isles and surrounding
parishes. The Dean of Argyll read the burial service, and there was then laid to rest one whose
memory will be cherished and who will be long mourned by all who knew her - rich and poor alike.
